Rajasthan High Court Denies Bail to Two Convicts in Jaipur Serial Blast Case

Jaipur, May 2: The Rajasthan High Court has denied bail to two convicts linked to the 2008 Jaipur serial blast case. The court rejected their plea to suspend their life sentences on Friday.

Mohammad Sarwar Azmi and Shahbaz Ahmed had sought bail until their appeal was heard, arguing that they had been in jail for a long time and that the appeal process could take considerable time. However, the bench comprising Justice Indrajit Singh and Justice Bhuvan Goyal dismissed their application.

The case involved a series of eight bomb explosions that occurred in Jaipur on May 13, 2008. A ninth bomb was found near a guest house in Chandpole market and was defused just minutes before it could explode.

In the ‘live bomb’ case, a special court sentenced Mohammad Sarwar Azmi, Shahbaz Ahmed, Saifur Rahman, and Mohammad Saif to life imprisonment on April 4, 2025. Previously, the trial court had sentenced the accused to death for the eight explosions, but the High Court later overturned those death sentences, acquitting the defendants.

The defense argued that the same evidence was presented in the ‘live bomb’ case as in the earlier blast cases, where the accused were acquitted. They contended that since the same facts had previously led to acquittals, the conviction in this case was questionable.

The defense also cited their prolonged incarceration and delays in the appeal process as grounds for bail. On the other hand, Additional Advocate General Rajesh Chaudhary, representing the state government, opposed the bail, stating that the case involved terrorism aimed at instilling fear among the public.

He noted that the accused had allegedly claimed responsibility for the blasts via email. The state government argued that the prosecution had presented additional evidence distinct from previous cases, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter, which resulted in the deaths of 71 individuals and injuries to 185 others.

Considering the gravity of the case, the state urged the court not to grant any relief to the convicts. After hearing arguments from both sides, the Rajasthan High Court denied the request to suspend the life sentences and also rejected the bail applications.
