Historic win for Opposition in Malaysia

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Bin Mohamad has scored a historic victory in the country’s general election.

The election commission said Mahathir’s party Pakatan Harapan won 115 seats, over the threshold of 112 seats needed to form a government.

Mahathir, defeated the governing Barisan Nasional coalition, which has been in power for over 60 years. He came out of retirement to take on his former protege, Najib Razak.

The new Malaysian PM will be sworn in today. Mahathir will become the oldest elected leader in the world.

Mahathir was Prime Minister, at the head of the BN coalition, for 22 years, from 1981 until he stepped down in 2003. Jubilant Mahathir supporters filled the streets as the victory became clear.
