Gandhinagar, May 1: In a bid to reduce road accidents and improve adherence to traffic laws, Gujarat has initiated a month-long statewide campaign focused on helmet enforcement. The campaign, dubbed the ‘Helmet Enforcement Special Drive’, will run from May 1 to May 31, with a particular emphasis on compliance among government employees.
Traffic police have been deployed at the entrances of government offices to ensure that the helmet rules are being followed. Officials arriving without helmets will face legal action, marking this initiative as an ‘inside-out’ enforcement strategy. According to a circular issued on Thursday, under Section 129 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, it is mandatory for both riders and passengers on two-wheelers to wear helmets.
The directive emphasizes strict compliance, with immediate fines imposed on violators. The campaign is being implemented across all districts, where police have been instructed to conduct round-the-clock checks on two-wheeler riders.
Police commissioners and range heads have been directed to submit daily reports to the state headquarters by 8 AM, detailing the number of violations committed by both the general public and government employees.
This initiative follows a review meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi last year, where the strict enforcement of helmet rules was praised. Officials have decided to implement this model not only in major cities like Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and Vadodara but also in smaller districts.
The deployment of traffic police at government office entrances aims to curb negligence among government employees, with the expectation that they will set an example by adhering to the law. The circular stresses that no leniency will be shown to anyone violating the rules, regardless of their position. The police have reiterated that anyone found violating the rules during this campaign will be fined immediately.
