Google may be developing a Chromecast successor with Google TV (4K) coming in 2020, and images of the device have surfaced thanks to a report. Dubbed the Google TV Streamer, the streaming device is believed to have the form factor of a set-top box, rather than a dongle that hangs behind your TV. It’s worth noting that Google reportedly started developing an Android-based Chromecast device in March.
Google TV Player plan revealed
In a report, 9to5Google shared an image of what appears to be the Google TV streamer and provided clues about its design. The device is said to have been redesigned, with Google ditching the dongle-like form factor. Until now, all of Google’s Chromecast devices have had the same design, allowing you to hang them on the back of your TV while still connecting them to an HDMI port.
However, the new device may feature a diagonal tablet design that looks like a Wi-Fi router.
The Google TV Streamer appears to have two cables on the back. It is speculated that the device’s minimum height could make it easier to install under the TV. According to the report, the TV streamer’s remote appears to be similar to existing models, with a D-pad, a back button, and a home button on the top half. However, the voice input button does not appear to be Google Assistant branded, so the company may opt for a generic button. The volume buttons can also be placed on the front of the remote control instead of on the side.
Additionally, the report suggests that Google may ditch the name “Chromecast” and call the device “Google TV Streamer” instead.
This development confirms previous reports claiming that Google is developing a successor to its 2020 Chromecast with a Google TV (4K) device. The codename is “YTC” and was reportedly discovered after a preview update to the Google Home app. It is said to be listed alongside the previous versions of “YTV” (Chromecast with Google TV) and “YTB” (Chromecast HD).
