Panaji : The Human Rights Commission on Sunday directed Superintendent of Police, North Goa, to investigate the matter of alleged lathicharge that took place on NSUI members in the second week of January this year.
The SP has been asked to submit report before March 2, 2022. It may be recalled that on January 8, 2022, whilst NSUI students were trying to meet Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and were walking towards his official residence from Church Square-Panaji, police constables deployed there had resorted to lathicharge on them.
Subsequently, President of NSUI, Naushad Chowdhari had lodged a complain with the police and Human Rights Commission. Acting on this complain, Human Rights Commission has given directives to the police to investigate the matter.
According to Naushad, they were supposed to meet the Chief Minister with a request to conduct online examination on account of the spike in Covid cases. However, they were restrained by the police from going ahead and were detained without listening to their grievances. NSUI had named one Head Constable Nilesh Naik and Duty Master, attached to Panjim Police Station, as accused persons who resorted to lathicharge without permission from authorities.
