Salem, October 24 (Udaipur Kiran) – Authorities in Tamil Nadu have issued a flood warning for several coastal districts after excess water was released from the Mettur Dam on Thursday. The Mettur Water Resources Department has also sent circulars to district collectors, alerting them to take necessary precautionary measures.
According to officials from the Public Works Department (PWD), the water discharge from the dam could increase up to 60,000 cubic feet per second (cusecs) as the inflow continues to rise. Residents living along the banks of the Cauvery River and in low-lying areas have been advised to move to safer locations.
The circular sent to coastal district administrations has directed officials to alert people in potentially flood-affected areas, asking them to secure their belongings and follow safety protocols.
Tamil Nadu is currently witnessing active northeast monsoon conditions, leading to heavy rainfall across several districts. Due to the continuous downpour, most reservoirs in the state have reached or are nearing full capacity. The Mettur Dam had already reached its maximum level, and until recently, 35,000 cusecs of water were being released daily.
With inflow levels now expected to rise further — between 45,000 and 60,000 cusecs — the release limit from the Mettur Dam has been increased from 35,000 to 45,000 cusecs as a precautionary measure.
