New Delhi, 29 December – Dense fog has enveloped Delhi-NCR and most parts of North India, significantly reducing visibility. This has caused delays in both train and flight operations. On Monday, a total of 128 flights were cancelled at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, increasing the difficulties faced by passengers.
Reduced visibility on roads has limited sight to just a few meters, causing vehicles to move slowly. The situation has also led to increased crowds at airports and railway platforms, forcing passengers to wait in cold weather.
Delhi Airport authorities stated that due to the dense fog, flight operations are currently running under CAT-3 conditions, which can lead to delays or cancellations. The Airport Authority posted on the social media platform ‘X’ that their ground teams are present on-site, assisting passengers to ensure a better travel experience.
The flight schedule at IGI Airport has been severely affected by the fog. For instance, Air India Express flight IX1221 from Goa was diverted to Ahmedabad due to low visibility. The flight departed from Goa’s Mopa Airport at 11:55 PM and was scheduled to arrive in Delhi at 2:35 AM but landed in Ahmedabad at 4:07 AM. With the crew reaching duty limits, passengers now have to wait until 12:30 PM for the next flight.
Out of the 128 cancelled flights at IGI Airport, 64 were arrivals and 64 departures. Additionally, 8 flights were diverted and over 30 flights are running late.
Airlines have advised passengers to check their flight status before travelling and to arrive at the airport well in advance. The Meteorological Department has warned that foggy conditions may persist for the next 24 hours.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) issued a statement saying, “Due to fog, visibility is low at select airports in North India, affecting flight schedules. Passengers are advised to stay in touch with their respective airlines through official communication channels and plan their travel with extra time for airport arrival and check-in procedures.”
