Chennai, August 29: The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has forecasted moderate rainfall with thunderstorms in some areas of Tamil Nadu’s Western Ghats over the next four days. Meteorological officials reported that a low-pressure area has formed in the lower atmosphere along the state’s coastal regions, which may lead to light rain in various districts, particularly Chennai, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Tiruchi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Shivaganga, and Ramanathapuram on Saturday. Light rain is also expected during the day in the delta districts and neighboring Puducherry and Karaikal.
While widespread heavy rainfall is not anticipated, the sporadic showers may provide temporary relief from the heat in several parts of the state. The Regional Meteorological Centre indicated that moderate rainfall could occur in a few places adjacent to the Western Ghats until August 31, with strong winds reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h during thunderstorms. Residents are advised to exercise caution during thunder and lightning, especially in open areas and away from trees or weak structures. Despite the possibility of rain, daytime temperatures are expected to remain high.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, maximum temperatures in Tamil Nadu could rise by up to three degrees Celsius above normal over the next four days. Consequently, areas that do not receive rain may continue to experience heat and discomfort. Additionally, a separate warning has been issued for fishermen operating along the southern Tamil Nadu coast, as adverse weather conditions with strong winds (up to 65 km/h) are expected until August 31.
Fishermen are advised to refrain from venturing into the coastal waters of southern Tamil Nadu, the Gulf of Mannar, and the adjacent Comorin Sea during the warning period. Those already at sea are urged to exercise caution and follow official updates from the meteorological department. Authorities have also advised fishing communities to secure their boats and equipment in light of the strong winds.
Small fishing boats are particularly at risk in stormy seas, and crews are recommended to halt operations until conditions improve and the meteorological department officially lifts its warnings after reassessment.
