New Zealand All-rounder Doug Bracewell Retires from All Formats

New Delhi, 29 December. New Zealand all-rounder Doug Bracewell has announced his retirement from all formats of cricket. The 35-year-old played 28 Tests, 21 ODIs, and 20 T20 matches between 2011 and 2023 during his international career.

Bracewell retired with a total of 74 Test wickets. In just his third Test match, he helped New Zealand defeat Australia in Hobart by taking 6-40 in an exciting final innings, earning the Man of the Match award as New Zealand won by seven runs.

This victory marked the last time New Zealand defeated their Trans-Tasman rivals on Australian soil in Test cricket.

In white-ball cricket, Bracewell took 46 wickets for New Zealand. His last international appearance came in 2023 during a Test match against Sri Lanka in Wellington. However, a recent rib injury forced him to end his domestic career with New Zealand’s Central Districts team.

In a statement, Bracewell said, “This has been a proud part of my life. As a young cricketer, this was always my dream. I will forever be grateful for the opportunities cricket gave me and for representing my country, as well as for playing for Central Districts throughout my domestic career.”

He added, “I want to thank all my teammates I have played with, and also the coaches and management who supported me along the way and helped me.”

Bracewell further mentioned that playing first-class and international cricket was a privilege. “I am thankful to have enjoyed this game for such a long time,” he said.

He retires as one of New Zealand cricket’s few modern all-rounders to achieve the elite first-class double of 4,000 runs and 400 career wickets. Of these, 3,029 runs and 258 wickets came for Central Districts, holding the best all-round record in the team’s history.

Besides domestic cricket for Central Districts, Bracewell also played county cricket in England for Essex and Northamptonshire.

He featured in the IPL 2012 for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), the SA20 2024 for Joburg Super Kings, and earlier this year in the Global Super League for Central Stags.
