Central Government Hikes Dearness Allowance to 55%: Here’s How It Will Impact Salaries

In a significant move for central government employees and pensioners, the Union Cabinet has approved a 2% hike in Dearness Allowance (DA), increasing it from 53% to 55%. The revised DA will be applicable retrospectively from January 1, 2025, and the increased amount is set to reflect in April salaries, along with arrears for January to March.

This announcement, made by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, impacts over 1 crore central government employees and pensioners, ensuring partial relief amidst rising inflation and cost of living.

DA Hike at 7-Year Low, But Relief Still Welcome

This latest 2% hike marks the lowest increment in DA over the past seven years. The last time such a modest raise was implemented was in 2018, where the government increased DA by 2%. In recent years, DA hikes have ranged between 3% and 4%, with employees expecting similar increases in light of persistent inflation.

Although some employee unions have expressed disappointment over the smaller-than-expected hike, experts say the move is still crucial as it maintains inflation-indexed earnings for employees and retirees.

DA Arrears and Previous Freeze Still a Concern

The government generally revises the DA twice a year—once in January and again in July—based on the All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI). However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, DA revisions were frozen for 18 months (from January 2020 to June 2021), leading to significant arrear demands from employees.

The current revision does not address those pending arrears, but the pressure on the government to resolve that matter continues to grow.

How Much Will Employees Gain?

For central government employees, DA is a key component of their salary. The increase to 55% means higher monthly income and enhanced take-home pay. It also boosts the Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners, increasing their monthly pensions and improving financial security during retirement.

For example:

  • An employee earning a basic pay of ₹50,000 will now receive ₹27,500 as DA, compared to ₹26,500 earlier.

  • Pensioners will also see an increase in their monthly pension through DR adjustments.
