New Delhi, June 2 — In a development that has once again brought COVID-19 concerns to the forefront, Ahmedabad has reported its first coronavirus-related death in nearly three years. The deceased was a woman suffering from pre-existing conditions such as high blood pressure and hypertension, according to officials.
The woman was admitted to LG Hospital in Maninagar on May 23. During treatment for hypertension-related complications, she tested positive for COVID-19 and subsequently passed away.
Health Department on Alert
Dr. Bhavin Solanki, Health Officer of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), confirmed that the patient, a resident of Dani Limda, had tested positive during her hospital stay. Following her death, the health department has ramped up monitoring and is collecting further details regarding the case.
This marks the first COVID fatality in Ahmedabad since the pandemic’s resurgence, raising fresh concerns about community transmission and healthcare preparedness.
Spike in Infections Across the City
In the past 24 hours alone, Ahmedabad has reported 55 new COVID-19 cases, pushing the city’s total active caseload to 163. As a precaution, isolation wards have been reactivated at SVP Hospital.
Statewide, Gujarat is now managing 320 active cases, with other cities like Surat also witnessing fresh infections. In the past 15 days, 22 new cases have emerged in Surat, including patients from City Light, Sagrampura, and Palanpur, where an 84-year-old man and a 28-year-old youth have tested positive.
Doctors Urge Caution, Not Panic
Dr. Sudhir Pandya, a leading health expert, addressed the situation, saying,
“The rise in cases is concerning, but most patients are recovering with minimal treatment or home remedies. There’s no need to panic, but vigilance is essential.”
He added that strong immunity can reduce the severity of infection, and even mild symptoms should be treated seriously.
