Biting Cold Continues in Madhya Pradesh; Alert in Several Cities

Bhopal, 21 November (Udaipur Kiran)। The impact of snowfall in northern hill states is now strongly visible in Madhya Pradesh, where cold wave conditions have prevailed for the past 15 days. In the last 24 hours, minimum temperatures in 12 major cities, including Bhopal and Indore, fell below 10°C. Rajgarh recorded the lowest at 7.5°C, while dense fog covered Bhedaghat in Jabalpur. Similar weather is expected to continue on Friday. Though a slight rise in temperature has been noted due to wind pattern change, meteorologists believe this is only temporary.

Cold wave

According to the Meteorological Department, a low-pressure area will activate over the southeast Bay of Bengal from 22 November and may turn into a depression by 24 November. This may increase moisture and intensify morning fog in several cities. Once this system moves ahead, a stronger cold spell is expected to return. Experts have warned that foggy conditions may continue for the next three to four days, followed by a sharp fall in temperatures, which could drop to 5–6°C in early December.

On Thursday, cold wave conditions prevailed in Bhopal, Indore, Rajgarh, Shajapur, Narsinghpur and Shivpuri, with severe cold wave recorded in Khandwa and Khargone. In Ujjain, the maximum temperature touched 29.5°C, but the night chill forced residents indoors. Cold wave conditions have affected Bhopal for the last ten days, and an alert remains in place for Friday.

Record-Breaking November Chill

This November has broken several cold records in the state. Bhopal recorded its coldest November in 84 years, while Indore is facing its chilliest November in 25 years. Malwa–Nimar regions are also witnessing below-normal temperatures. Pachmarhi once again remained among the coldest locations at 7.6°C, second only to Rajgarh. Shajapur recorded 7.8°C, Shivpuri 8°C, Naugaon (Chhatarpur) 8.3°C, Khandwa 8.4°C, Narsinghpur 8.8°C, and Umaria and Khargone 9°C. Raisen recorded 9.6°C. Among major cities, Bhopal recorded 9.2°C, Indore 8°C, Gwalior 11.9°C, Ujjain 10.5°C and Jabalpur 12°C.

Limited Relief as Wind Direction Changes

Senior meteorologist P.K. Raikwar said the slight rise in temperatures is temporary as wind direction has shifted to the east. Once winds shift back to the north-west, the next phase of intense cold will begin. Increased moisture is likely to keep fog and haze conditions active for the next few days, affecting visibility.

Weather expert Ajay Shukla said the low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal on 22 November will indirectly influence Madhya Pradesh’s weather, leading to denser morning fog in some regions. The fluctuation may persist for three to four days, after which severe cold conditions will return. He indicated that December may remain colder than usual this year and warned farmers to take precautions to protect sensitive crops like wheat and gram from frost.
