The patient, a resident of Bhilwara, suffered the severe injury on April 24 while riding a motorcycle behind a truck. Following sudden braking, an iron pipe loaded on the truck slipped and penetrated his chest. The pipe was so long that it had to be cut on the spot before he could be shifted to the hospital. He was brought in a critical condition with heavy blood loss and in shock.

A CT scan conducted by Professor Dr Kushal Gehlot from the Radiology Department revealed that the 4 cm thick pipe had broken ribs, pierced the lung, and reached up to the neck. It also damaged the subclavian artery and vein, leading to massive bleeding in the lungs (hemothorax).

A team led by cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Vinay Naithani immediately began surgery. The L-shaped pipe was carefully removed, followed by vascular repair of damaged blood vessels, treatment of the lung injury, and reconstruction of broken ribs.

Head of the Anaesthesia Department Dr Udita Naithani, along with Dr Mahesh Somani, ensured safe administration of anaesthesia despite the patient’s critical condition. The surgical team also included Dr Girish, Dr Jyotidrone, and Nursing Officer Santosh Puri Goswami, along with OT and ICU staff who played a key role in the procedure.

Following the successful surgery, the patient is now stable and recovering well. He has also started taking a normal diet.

RNT Medical College Principal Dr Rahul Jain congratulated the team, stating that such impalement injuries usually have a very high mortality rate, but timely decision-making and coordinated teamwork helped save a life.

Doctors advised that in such accidents, applying pressure on the wound may help control bleeding, but the object lodged inside the body should never be removed without medical supervision.
