Rogue Prince of Persia was revealed in a trailer during the Triple I Initiative livestream, showing off some impressive cinematics and a bit of gameplay. According to Ubisoft, the game is set in Tisphon, the capital of a fictional Persian empire under siege by the Hun army. Unlike The Lost Crown, here players can take control of a prince who has a magical orb that revives him every time he dies.

As you would expect from a villain, players die only to be revived and sent back to the beginning. This cycle repeats until the player is able to improve and upgrade their skills to fully complete the game. With each quest, players explore new biomes, try out new weapons, gain valuable knowledge, find and equip trinkets, and attempt to upgrade their equipment and save their city from invasion.

The trailer shows the acrobatic prince running over walls, making jumps and sliding over deadly obstacles in tricky platforming sections. Players progress through procedurally generated levels in colorful and varied areas inspired by Iranian architecture, battling Huns and corrupt creatures imbued with dark shamanic magic.

The prince also has various weapons that support him in battle. According to Ubisoft, players can equip twin daggers, spears, broadswords and axes, as well as add secondary weapons such as shields, bows and grappling hooks.

Developer Evil Empire is no stranger to the roguelike genre, having developed Dead Cells with Motion Twin. According to Ubisoft, the studio approached the publisher with its rebellious take on the Persian prince. The legendary game series was revived after a multi-year hiatus with the release of Prince of Persia:

The Lost Crown earlier this year. The Lost Crown, a 2.5D Metroidvania action platformer, featured responsive platforming and fast-paced combat that marked a new beginning for the series. In our review of the game, we found Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown to be an inspired entry into the genre that paves a new path for the future of the series. It appears that the title of Iran’s next prince has also taken the same path.

Rogue Prince of Persia will be released in Early Access on Steam on May 14th, with Ubisoft confirming a release on other platforms at a later date.
