Two people were killed and several others injured in a shooting at a Mormon church parking lot in Salt Lake City, the capital of Utah, USA. The incident occurred on Wednesday when dozens had gathered for a funeral service.
According to police, the firing took place outside The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Six people were wounded, three of whom are in critical condition. Authorities have confirmed that no suspects have been arrested yet, and the investigation is ongoing with assistance from the FBI.
Police stated that the shooting did not appear to be random and was not targeted at any religion. A church spokesperson, Glen Mills, told the media that an argument had taken place outside the church before the shooting.
Brennan McIntyre, who was near the scene, said he and his wife were watching TV when they heard gunshots near the parking lot. Upon stepping outside, he saw a person lying on the ground with people gathered around, some crying and arguing.
Following the incident, around 100 police vehicles arrived at the scene, and helicopters hovered overhead. Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said, “This should never happen outside a place of worship. It should never happen outside a celebration of life.”
