Boiler Explosion at Belagavi Sugar Factory Kills Six Workers

Belagavi: A tragic accident at a sugar factory in Belagavi district, Karnataka, has claimed the lives of six workers, leaving several families devastated.

The incident occurred at the Inamdar Sugar Factory located in Markumbi village of Bailhongal taluka. A boiler explosion took place, initially reported to have caused three fatalities. However, three more workers succumbed to their injuries during treatment. Several others remain critically injured and are undergoing medical care.

The accident happened around 2:30 pm in the factory’s number one compartment, where wall repairs and maintenance were underway. According to police, a valve failure caused hot jaggery syrup to spill out, severely burning the nearby workers. The factory is a joint venture operated by Vikram Inamdar, Prabhakar Kore, and Vijay Metagudi and has previously received awards.

The deceased have been identified as Akshay Chopade (45), Deepak Mannoli (31), Sudarshan Banoshi (25), Bhartesh Sarwade (27), Guru Tammanavar (26), and Manjunath Kajagar (28). Akshay, Deepak, and Sudarshan died initially, followed by others later due to their injuries.

The injured were immediately admitted to Bailhongal Government Hospital and private hospitals in Belagavi, with some still in critical condition.

Following the tragedy, the families of the deceased arrived at the hospitals, and grief prevailed. Postmortem examinations for two bodies have commenced at a private hospital. Relatives have expressed anger towards the factory management for not announcing any compensation or offering condolences hours after the incident.

The police have registered a case and launched an investigation. The Belagavi Rural SP confirmed the incident and stated that a thorough inquiry is underway to determine any negligence. Meanwhile, the factory operations have been suspended.
