Washington, May 2: U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Friday that negotiations with Iran remain uncertain. He expressed dissatisfaction with the current proposals and indicated that both diplomatic and military options are on the table.
Speaking to reporters as he departed on Marine One, Trump said, “They want to make a deal, but I’m not satisfied with it, so we’ll see what happens next.”
He described Iran’s leadership as divided and confused, asserting that while they all want to negotiate, the situation is chaotic, and there are significant internal disagreements.
Trump claimed that this internal strife is undermining Iran’s position in negotiations. He noted that the leaders are “not in agreement with each other” and “don’t even know who the real leader is,” complicating the talks.
He also stated that Iran’s military has significantly weakened. According to Trump, following recent conflicts, the country has lost its navy and air force, and its defense capabilities are limited.
He warned that if negotiations fail, military action could be an option, stating that either tensions will escalate or a deal will be reached. Trump mentioned that there is no need for congressional approval for military actions, claiming such approvals have never been sought and many consider them unconstitutional.
He asserted that U.S. military actions have increased pressure on Iran, saying, “We are in the midst of a big victory,” and that Iran’s weakened state is pushing them towards a deal.
Trump acknowledged that talks are ongoing but are constantly changing. He explained that they get close to an agreement, only for a new group to emerge, altering Iran’s position.
He also noted that the ongoing conflict is affecting global oil markets, with significant amounts of oil stranded at sea due to supply disruptions.
The U.S. has long employed both sanctions and negotiations to curb Iran’s nuclear program, but talks have repeatedly stalled, particularly over issues of inspections, uranium enrichment limits, and regional security concerns.
The recent tensions have raised fears of escalating conflict in the Middle East, with energy markets worldwide, especially in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding maritime routes, closely monitoring the situation.
