Indian Defence Secretary Visits Armenia to Strengthen Defence Ties

Yerevan, August 17: India’s Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh has embarked on an official two-day visit to Armenia. He arrived in the capital, Yerevan, today as part of discussions aimed at enhancing defence cooperation between the two nations. Armenia is a significant partner for India in the field of defence products, and both countries have engaged in important discussions regarding modern defence equipment and security issues.

Upon his arrival, Singh was welcomed by India’s Ambassador to Armenia and senior officials from the Armenian Ministry of Defence. During this official visit, he is scheduled to hold crucial meetings with Armenia’s top political and defence leadership.

These meetings are expected to focus on determining the future direction of defence and strategic cooperation between the two countries. Over the past few years, defence collaboration between India and Armenia has strengthened significantly, encompassing areas such as defence equipment, military training, capacity building, and defence technology.

In April 2026, Lieutenant General Edward Asryan, Chief of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces, visited India and met with Defence Secretary Singh in New Delhi. During this meeting, both sides discussed various issues related to defence cooperation, including military collaboration, defence modernisation, and regional security.

Singh’s current visit is seen as a crucial step in advancing this growing defence cooperation. The discussions may explore potential avenues for strengthening defence industrial cooperation, military training, capacity development, defence technology, and strategic coordination.

For Armenia, strengthening defence relations with India is vital as it seeks to modernise its defence capabilities and broaden defence partnerships with various countries. Meanwhile, for India, the increasing collaboration with Armenia presents an opportunity to bolster strategic and security relations in the region. High-level talks during Singh’s two-day visit are expected to identify new areas for advancing defence and strategic partnerships between the two nations.
