Beijing, August 20: China has criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign aimed at imposing economic sanctions on Iran and its partners. According to Beijing, such restrictions could complicate the situation further. In a press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated, “Imposing sanctions and exerting pressure does not resolve the issue.”
He urged all parties involved to take responsible steps and resolve issues through diplomatic and political means. These measures are particularly significant for China, as analytics firm Kepler reports that it purchases over 80 percent of the oil exported from Iran. If the U.S. imposes extensive sanctions on Chinese companies, banks, or shipping networks involved in Iranian oil purchases, it could directly impact U.S.-China relations, making this the most sensitive front of Trump’s new economic strategy.
The U.S. has previously sanctioned Chinese refineries and shipping companies linked to Iranian oil purchases and transportation. Trump’s latest warning suggests that Washington may expand the scope of these sanctions.
On Thursday morning (local time), President Trump announced the “Economic D-Day” on Truth Social, stating that he would take the toughest measures yet against Iran’s partners and supporters. He expressed disappointment that the Islamic Republic of Iran had failed to take advantage of the opportunities he provided for negotiations.
Trump warned that Iran would face unprecedented levels of economic warfare and isolation. He also cautioned other countries against providing any assistance to Iran, warning that they could suffer significant economic repercussions as well.
