Mumbai, August 21: A crane accident occurred in Kurla, Mumbai, on Friday morning, resulting in injuries to several individuals. The crane was being used to lift an excavator to the upper part of a building when it lost balance and collapsed, striking two nearby houses and the overhead electric wires of the Mumbai local railway. Emergency services rushed the injured to hospitals, causing panic in the area. Local police and administration arrived promptly to investigate the incident.
According to Central Railway officials, the crane, operated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), fell from a work site between Kurla and Trombay. Fortunately, as this line primarily serves freight trains, regular train operations were not significantly affected. Reports indicate that 11 people sustained injuries, and MMRDA has accepted responsibility for the incident.
Mumbai Police DCP Ganesh Shinde stated that he met with the injured at the hospital. Nine of them are reported to be in stable condition, while one or two individuals have been admitted to private hospitals. There have been no reports of fatalities so far.
Rescue operations are ongoing, and efforts are being made to remove the crane from the site. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter.
This incident follows a recent landslide in Ghatkopar, which tragically resulted in the deaths of several individuals, including three children, and left four others injured. The landslide occurred in the Ashok Nagar area of Chirag Nagar while residents were asleep, as a portion of a nearby hill collapsed, sending mud, large stones, and debris crashing onto homes.
