‘The Bengal Files’ Faces Ban in West Bengal, Makers Seek President’s Intervention

New Delhi, September 4 (Kiran News): Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri’s controversial film The Bengal Files is set to release worldwide on September 5, but its screening in West Bengal has been blocked. Seeking intervention, Agnihotri has written a letter to President Droupadi Murmu requesting support.

Producer Pallavi Joshi, in her letter, expressed disappointment that multiplex chains in West Bengal have refused to screen the film, citing political pressure and threats from the ruling party. She urged that her constitutional rights be protected and that the film’s release in Bengal be ensured.

Reacting to the development, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya shared the letter on Thursday and said this was not the first instance of open censorship. He recalled that The Kerala Story too was prevented from being released in theatres despite court approval, owing to threats of violence under the Mamata Banerjee administration. He also referred to the recent cancellation of lyricist Javed Akhtar’s programme following pressure from radical groups.

Malviya accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of pursuing appeasement politics, stating that it had now reached “an absurd level.” He likened the situation to “riding a tiger — unable to dismount or control it, fearing it might devour her.”
