Shiv Sena Supports Marathi Learning for Auto-Rickshaw Drivers

Mumbai, May 1: The Maharashtra government’s decision to grant auto-rickshaw drivers four months to learn the Marathi language has sparked a new debate on language and employment in the state. Responding to this issue, Shiv Sena spokesperson Raju Waghmare described the initiative as a straightforward and practical step.

He mentioned that the government and the transport department are releasing booklets to assist drivers in learning Marathi easily. Additionally, he noted that there are many mobile apps available today that simplify the language learning process.

In an interview, Waghmare clarified that there is significant similarity between the scripts of Hindi and Marathi, suggesting that drivers need to focus only on essential aspects such as directions, place names, and basic conversations. According to him, learning Marathi is crucial as most road signs and information boards in the state are written in Marathi, facilitating better communication between passengers and drivers.

He emphasized that the government’s stance is clear: every individual working in Maharashtra should know Marathi. He believes that for those working in the state and supporting their families, knowledge of the local language is essential, regardless of their profession.

Congress leader Amin Patel stated that there is no opposition to the Marathi language. He noted that people are willing to learn and speak Marathi voluntarily, with many already using the language. According to him, this issue is not one of controversy but rather a natural process of adopting the language.
