Los Angeles, June 22: A massive fire has erupted in a warehouse in Los Angeles, USA. Firefighters are working tirelessly to control the blaze, which continues to emit smoke. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) reported that efforts to extinguish the fire in a large industrial building have been ongoing throughout the night and will continue on Sunday.
The fire broke out on Wednesday in a large warehouse located in the Boyle Heights area, producing heavy smoke that spread across several parts of the metropolitan area for days.
In light of the seriousness of the incident, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared a local emergency on Saturday, according to reports from Xinhua News Agency.
As of Sunday, the LAFD stated that firefighters have managed to contain the fire to a section of the building. To facilitate access, they removed parts of the outer wall overnight.
Challenges have arisen in extinguishing the fire due to large storage racks, making it difficult for firefighters to safely use water hoses inside the building.
According to the LAFD, power to several solar panels on-site has been shut off, and multiple lithium-ion batteries have been removed, significantly reducing the risk to firefighters and nearby residents.
Firefighters are expected to continue their efforts throughout the day, utilizing large amounts of water to extinguish the remaining flames. Officials have warned that the amount and color of smoke visible in surrounding areas may change during firefighting efforts.
Currently, no evacuation orders or shelter-in-place directives have been issued for residents. However, a smoke-related advisory has been issued for areas east of Boyle Heights. Sensitive individuals are advised to monitor air quality warnings from the South Coast Air Quality Management District and to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.
