Kolkata, June 21: A group of rebel Lok Sabha MPs from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is contemplating filing a defamation lawsuit against party MP Mahua Moitra. The rebels are led by four-time MP Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and Shatabdi Roy.
These MPs have recently joined the National Citizens Party of India (NCPI) based in Tripura. The potential lawsuit stems from a controversial social media post by Moitra, in which she accused two rebel TMC MPs of leaving the party for monetary gain to join NCPI. Moitra claimed that each MP received at least ₹40 crores to join NCPI.
The situation echoes a recent incident in Maharashtra, where several MPs from Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena have also turned rebel, with rumors suggesting they might join the Eknath Shinde faction. Sanjay Raut from the Thackeray faction recently accused them of accepting ₹15 crores in a social media post.
In her post, Moitra made serious allegations against the rebel TMC MPs, questioning why they were settling for only ₹15 crores. She stated, “According to our sources, they are receiving an advance of ₹4 crores and ₹1 crore per month for the next 36 months.”
Sources indicate that the rebel TMC MPs held a virtual meeting on Sunday afternoon to discuss the possibility of filing a defamation suit against Moitra. Confirming this possibility, Shatabdi Roy mentioned that they are indeed considering it.
Not only the rebel MPs but also the dissenting MLAs from West Bengal’s assembly have been targets of Moitra’s sharp criticisms on social media. She has accused them of betraying the party after winning elections on TMC tickets and insisted that they should resign before speaking against the party leadership.
