Severe Cold Wave Grips Northern India: Dense Fog Delays 202 Flights, Airports Shut in Srinagar and Amritsar

New Delhi, January 5 – A severe cold wave continues to disrupt life across northern India, with dense fog and freezing temperatures affecting air and rail travel. At Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi, 202 flights were delayed on Friday due to poor visibility caused by the thick fog. Similarly, several trains departing from Delhi and Agra were delayed, leaving passengers stranded in the cold.

Zero Visibility Forces Airport Shutdowns in Amritsar and Srinagar

Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport was forced to shut down flight operations due to zero visibility caused by dense fog. All flights in and out of Amritsar have been halted until conditions improve. In Srinagar, heavy snowfall combined with low visibility has also led to a complete suspension of flight services. Passengers have been advised to check with airlines for updates before heading to the airport.

Schools Shut, Timings Revised Amid Cold Wave

The cold wave has also impacted daily life in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, with schools taking precautionary measures to protect students from the extreme weather. In Noida, schools up to Class 8 have been closed due to the severe chill. Meanwhile, in Patna, all schools have revised their timings, now operating from 9 AM to 4 PM until January 6 to ensure students don’t have to venture out in the early morning cold.

Mercury Plunges in Himachal Pradesh as Snowfall Intensifies

In the hill states, particularly Himachal Pradesh, heavy snowfall has caused a significant drop in temperatures. Five regions in the state recorded sub-zero temperatures:

  • Tabo: -14.7°C
  • Samdo: -9.3°C
  • Kukumseri: -6.9°C
  • Kalpa: -2°C
  • Manali: 2.8°C

The harsh weather has left many areas cut off, and residents are struggling to cope with freezing conditions. Authorities have advised caution when traveling through snow-affected regions.
