Bhopal, January 3 – For astronomy enthusiasts, Saturday, January 4, promises to be an extraordinary day with two significant celestial events set to occur. The first event involves Earth reaching its closest point to the Sun this year, a phenomenon known as perihelion. Despite being closest to the Sun, the ongoing intense winter cold will remain unaffected. The second event will witness a rare alignment of Saturn, the Moon, and Venus, creating a spectacular view in the evening sky.

Earth at Perihelion: Closest to the Sun
According to Sarika Gharu, a national award-winning science communicator, Earth’s closest approach to the Sun will occur at 6:58 PM on Saturday. At this point, the distance between Earth and the Sun will reduce to 147.1 million kilometers, marking the perihelion—the closest point in Earth’s elliptical orbit around the Sun.
Gharu explained that while it may seem counterintuitive to experience severe cold when Earth is closest to the Sun, the reason lies in the tilt of Earth’s axis. During winter, the Sun’s rays hit the northern hemisphere at an oblique angle, resulting in less direct heat and colder temperatures, even when Earth is closer to the Sun.
She further added that in July, Earth will reach its farthest point from the Sun, a phenomenon known as aphelion, when the distance between the two will increase by 5 million kilometers compared to perihelion.
Rare Celestial Alignment: Saturn, Moon, and Venus
Apart from Earth’s closest approach to the Sun, the evening sky will present another fascinating event—a line-up of Saturn, the crescent Moon, and Venus. This celestial trio will be visible after sunset for about two hours, offering a rare and spectacular sight for stargazers.
