Sydney, January 4 – Amid speculation surrounding his exclusion from the playing XI in the ongoing fifth Test between India and Australia, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has broken his silence. Speaking to the broadcaster on Saturday, Rohit firmly stated, “I haven’t retired.” He further clarified that his decision to sit out the match was driven by his poor form and taken in the best interest of the team.

Rohit admitted,
“It was a difficult decision to drop myself, but it was necessary for the team. Decisions about who stays in the team are ours to make, not anyone else’s.” He also reflected on the abrupt criticism he has faced, stating,
“Just four or five months ago, my captaincy and ideas were being praised. Suddenly, things are being labeled as bad. I might not be scoring runs right now, but that doesn’t mean I won’t score in the future.”
Shubman Gill Replaces Rohit, Bumrah Leads Team India
In Rohit’s absence, Jasprit Bumrah has taken over the captaincy for the crucial Sydney Test. Bumrah led the team out for the toss wearing the captain’s blazer, while Shubman Gill replaced Rohit in the playing XI.
Rohit’s decision comes after a disappointing run in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024, where he has struggled to find form. His tally in the series stands at just 31 runs from 5 innings across 3 Tests, with an average of 6.20. Overall, in 2024, Rohit has managed only 131 runs at an average of 24.76, a performance far below his usual standards.
Criticism and Reflection on Leadership
Rohit’s leadership came under scrutiny following India’s performance in the series. However, he reminded critics of his past success as captain, highlighting that his strategies were effective just a few months ago. Despite the current dip in form, Rohit remains confident in his abilities and the team’s potential moving forward.
The captaincy baton has now been temporarily passed to Jasprit Bumrah, who will aim to lead India to a strong finish in the final Test. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, who has been in promising form, will look to make the most of this opportunity in the absence of the seasoned opener.
