New Delhi, August 17: The sport of squash is rapidly advancing in India. Recently, Anahat Singh made headlines by winning the World Junior Squash Championship at just 18 years of age. Raghuram Ayyar, the Chief Executive Officer of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), expressed his happiness regarding this progress. He stated that the IOA is working with federations to establish more squash courts across various districts.
During a recent award ceremony organized by the Squash Federation of India in collaboration with HACL Squash, Ayyar mentioned in an interview, “The IOA will collaborate with the National Sports Federation to popularize all sports. We are very pleased with the progress made in squash. Our goal is to make this sport accessible to everyone. Previously, young individuals interested in playing squash found it difficult to access the sport, but now, if you look around, there are courts available… temporary courts that can be set up easily without requiring significant investment. Therefore, we are working with the federation to ensure that more courts are built in various districts, allowing anyone interested in the sport to have easy access.”
Regarding the upcoming Summer Olympics, Ayyar noted, “There is still a considerable amount of time until the 2028 Olympics, so the final number of participating athletes will be determined in the next year. We cannot provide an exact figure at this moment, but it will likely be around the same number of athletes who participated in the previous Olympics in Paris.”
The inclusion of cricket in the 2028 LA Olympics has generated significant excitement among Indian sports enthusiasts, with hopes for medals in this event. Ayyar confirmed that preparations for this are in full swing.
India is set to host the upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2030, which may include 15 to 17 sports. The CEO of the Indian Olympic Association stated, “The sports program is currently being finalized. The complete final list will be available by early next year, but the number of sports for the games in Ahmedabad will be between 15 and 17.”
