Mumbai, May 25 – In a historic leadership transition, Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new captain of the Indian Test team, with Rishabh Pant named as his deputy. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the decision on Saturday following a high-level selection meeting held at its Mumbai headquarters.
The announcement also included the 18-member Indian squad for the upcoming five-Test series against England, scheduled to begin on June 20. This marks the first Test assignment for India following the retirements of stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from the longest format.

Gill’s appointment as skipper signals the dawn of a new era in Indian cricket. The stylish right-hander has been one of the most consistent performers across formats in recent years and now takes charge of the red-ball team at a critical juncture.
