Patna, May 2: In a significant breakthrough against cybercrime, the Cyber Police Station in Muzaffarpur has uncovered an organized gang involved in defrauding victims through a so-called ‘Digital Arrest’ scam.
The operation was initiated following a written complaint from a senior citizen who was threatened and coerced into transferring ₹1.7 million. The victim, 73-year-old Bhola Prasad Mahto from Mushahari, reported receiving multiple video calls from individuals impersonating police and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials starting April 5, 2026.
The fraudsters allegedly intimidated him with threats of a ‘Digital Arrest’, causing him mental distress. Under pressure, the victim transferred ₹1.7 million to an account belonging to Brajesh Kumar at a Federal Bank branch in Bhagwanpur via RTGS on April 10.
It was only on April 13 that he realized he had been scammed and promptly reported the incident to his bank and the National Cyber Crime Helpline (1930). Taking the complaint seriously, the police registered case number 58/26 and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the direction of senior officials.
Through technical surveillance, call detail analysis, and investigation of bank transactions, three suspects were arrested, identified as Brajesh Kumar, Krishna Kumar, and Vikram Kumar. These arrests mark a crucial step in curbing new techniques of cyber fraud.
During the operation, police seized mobile phones, checkbooks, passbooks, and debit cards from the suspects. Preliminary investigations revealed that the bank accounts used in this case were linked to multiple cyber fraud incidents across the country, indicating a broader network.
Authorities suspect that this gang operates at an interstate level, targeting victims using innovative tactics like ‘Digital Arrest’. Raids are ongoing to apprehend the remaining members.
Officials have urged citizens to remain vigilant and cautious, advising them not to trust unsolicited phone or video calls from individuals claiming to be police, CBI, or other officials.
