Udaipur, February 14: The standoff following the death of a drug trafficker in an encounter with police in Pali district, Rajasthan, has come to an end. Tensions had escalated outside the mortuary after the incident, but the situation calmed down on Saturday after an agreement was reached between the administration and the victim’s family. The post-mortem was conducted transparently under the supervision of a medical board.
The incident began on Thursday night when the Anti-Narcotics Task Force received information about two suspicious vehicles loaded with opium entering the Pali border. The police acted swiftly, but the traffickers attempted to flee. One vehicle managed to escape, while the other was surrounded by police. Cornered, the traffickers opened fire on the police team, who responded in self-defense, resulting in a bullet striking one trafficker below the neck. He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The police recovered approximately 500 kilograms of opium, illegal firearms, and a large quantity of ammunition from the scene.
Following the death, the victim’s family and local residents camped outside the mortuary, alleging that the encounter was staged. They demanded to speak with another youth who was apprehended during the incident. This standoff delayed the post-mortem for an extended period. Police and senior officials engaged in sensitive discussions with the family, assuring them of a fair investigation. After lengthy negotiations, the family agreed to the post-mortem conducted by the medical board.
The post-mortem process was conducted with complete transparency, overseen by Desuri SDM Siddharth Sandu and a judicial magistrate. The deceased’s relatives were present during the examination. A mobile X-ray machine was brought to the mortuary to locate the bullet, but it was not found. Subsequently, the body was taken to the hospital’s X-ray room for further examination from all angles. When the bullet remained undetected, a decision was made to conduct a CT scan to determine its exact location, which would be extracted before completing the post-mortem.
Once the formalities of the post-mortem are completed, arrangements will be made to send the deceased’s body to his native village. Throughout this incident, the police and administration have exercised restraint and transparency, managing to control the situation. Local residents are now hopeful for a just resolution to the matter.
