Harare, July 26: India has clinched a 3-0 victory in the three-match T20 series against Zimbabwe. This marks Shreyas Iyer’s first series win as the captain of the Indian cricket team, a moment he describes as special. He also praised the performance of the young players throughout the series.
After the series win, Iyer stated, “We have seen how fearless the players are; this is a group of young players showing tremendous energy and intent on the field, especially when playing back-to-back games. As a captain and a team, I need such energy. They can continue to perform like this even in consecutive matches. Yes, winning the series in Zimbabwe feels special to me. It is going to be a memorable moment.”
Iyer highlighted the high-level exposure players receive through tournaments like the Indian Premier League (IPL), noting that he feels he has played matches on par with their experience. “There are many players with tremendous experience as they also play in the IPL these days,” he added.
He emphasized the unique talent within the team and the importance of ensuring players feel comfortable on the field to bring out their best performances.
Iyer also stressed the need for consistency and courage to face future challenges. He mentioned that if everything goes well, India might tour Bangladesh for a white-ball series and could also have three T20 matches against Afghanistan in September. India’s next white-ball assignment includes three ODIs and five T20s against the West Indies, followed by the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Finally, Iyer reiterated the team’s commitment to continuously improve their performance and play to the established standards in T20 cricket.
