Glasgow, July 27: Indian boxer Preeti delivered an impressive performance at the Commonwealth Games 2026, defeating Malawi’s Debra Mitenge in the Round of 16 through a ‘Referee Stops Contest’ (RSC). This victory secured her a place in the women’s 54 kg quarter-finals. Meanwhile, in the men’s 55 kg category, Jadumani Singh triumphed over a Pakistani boxer, advancing to the quarter-finals as well.
In the men’s 55 kg division, Jadumani Singh dominated Pakistan’s Rahman with a 5-0 victory in the Round of 16. He won the first round 3-2 and received unanimous 10-10 scores from all judges in the second round. Earlier, he had defeated Scotland’s Aaron Cullen 5-0 in the Round of 32.
Preeti showcased her dominance from the start, with all five judges favoring her in the first round. She landed several precise punches, prompting the referee to stop the contest at 2:13 minutes into the second round, marking a remarkable victory. The judges’ scorecards reflected her superiority, with four judges scoring the first round 10-9 in her favor and one judge giving a score of 10-8. Mitenge was knocked down twice before the contest was halted. Preeti will face Northern Ireland’s Nicole Clyde in the quarter-finals on July 28, who also advanced by defeating Ghana’s Bamfo with a unanimous decision (5-0).
The quarter-final match poses a significant challenge for the Indian boxer, as it will be crucial for securing a place in the semi-finals. Additionally, India celebrated two more medals by Sunday evening. Mirabai Chanu completed a hat-trick of gold medals in the women’s 48 kg category, lifting a total of 190 kg (85 kg in snatch and 105 kg in clean and jerk). Earlier, weightlifter Rishikant Singh Chanambam secured a silver medal in the men’s 60 kg category, lifting a total of 264 kg, including 121 kg in snatch and 143 kg in clean and jerk.
