Imphal : Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will address a public meeting and interact with leaders of the alliance partners of the Congress in Manipur on Monday. Gandhi will meet public leaders and Congress workers as part of the election campaign for the two-phase Manipur Assembly polls on Feb 28 and Mar 5. Congress’ senior observer for Manipur election Jairam Ramesh said on Saturday said a Congress government came to power in 2002 in Manipur and in 2004 in New Delhi.
History will be repeated this time as a Congress government will come to power in 2022 in Manipur and in 2024 at the centre. Addressing the media at the state Congress office here, Jairam said Manipur will usher in a political change in India. Congress is confident that Gandhi’s visit to Manipur will send a powerful message that the people of the Northeastern state will vote for a change and India will follow in the footsteps of Manipur in 2024, he said.
Gandhi, during his speech at the public rally in Hapta Kangjeibung, was likely to take up the issues of the dark phase of the BJP rule in Manipur, said Jairam, who described the governments run by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the centre and Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh in the state as “complete failures”.
Former Union Minister Bhakta Charan Das said Gandhi will pay floral tribute at Saheed Minar, Imphal, where Prince Tikendrajit and General Thangal were hanged to death after the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891. Gandhi will also pay tribute to women freedom fighters of Manipur at Nupi Lal complex before addressing the public meeting at Hapta Kangjeibung. Considering the Covid pandemic restrictions, the Congress will make special arrangements for the people to watch the programmes live in far-off places.
