Bhopal, September 16 (Udaipur Kiran) : In Bhopal, Governor Mangu Bhai Patel has called for enhanced screening of children for sickle cell disease in primary schools and Anganwadi centers across Madhya Pradesh. This directive came during a review meeting of the ‘National Sickle Cell Elimination Mission 2047’ and the ‘National Tuberculosis Elimination Program’ held at Lok Bhawan.
Patel highlighted the importance of early screening to identify children affected by this genetic condition and those carrying the sickle cell trait, ensuring they receive appropriate counseling and follow-up care. He stressed that children’s health and development are paramount, as they represent the future of the nation.
The Governor also urged greater participation from public representatives in the campaigns against sickle cell disease and tuberculosis. He suggested that officials collaborate with MPs and MLAs to organize health camps in their constituencies by mobilizing resources and financial support.
Furthermore, Patel emphasized the need to involve youth in awareness campaigns. He encouraged officials to reach out to university and college students, motivating them to become ‘Sickle Friends’ to help spread awareness in the community.
During the meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla reported that out of the 1.34 crore people screened in the state, 92% have received genetic status cards. He also noted that 4,825 ‘Sickle Friends’ have been created as part of the awareness initiative, with efforts ongoing to increase this number. Shukla added that the tuberculosis recovery rate in Madhya Pradesh has reached 89%, with a decline in mortality rates.
