Udaipur : Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital, Umarada, successfully performed surgery on a child with two rare diseases.
Pediatric surgeon Dr. Atul Mishra said that the seven-month-old child from Udaipur had his first surgery when he was two days old. The child had tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF), a condition in which the esophagus (the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach) is not connected to the trachea (the tube that carries air from the throat to the lungs). The surgery was successful seven months ago.

After being healthy for some time, the child recently complained of cough and fever (pneumonia). He was admitted to PIMS Hospital. Investigations revealed that the child had another major condition, diaphragmatic hernia. In this condition, there is a large hole in the diaphragm, the muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen. The only treatment for this condition is a complex and risky surgery. The hole was closed in an operation that lasted about two and a half hours.
Dr. Mishra said that both conditions are rare, and having them both in the same child is even rarer. With the hard work of the entire team, the parents’ trust, and God’s grace, the child is now completely healthy.
The entire process was supported by Dr. Kamlesh, Dr. Pinu, Dr. Hardika, Dr. Ipra, staff Arun, Pradip, Kuldeep, Ashok, and Dr. Vivek Parashar and Dr. Rahul Khatri of the Pediatric Department.
PIMS Hospital Chairman Ashish Agarwal said that the hospital-institute is equipped with all the latest facilities. Treatment is provided free of charge at very discounted rates or under philanthropist schemes.
The parents of the child expressed their gratitude to the doctors and staff of PIMS Hospital for saving their child’s life. They said that they were very worried about their child’s condition, but the doctors and staff gave them hope and confidence. They said that they would never forget the kindness and compassion of the PIMS Hospital team.
