UDAIPUR, June 1, 2026 (Udaipur Kiran) : The Department of Public Health Dentistry at Pacific Dental College and Hospital, Udaipur, organised a series of public awareness programmes at various locations from May 25 to May 31 on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day. The week-long campaign aimed to create awareness among the general public, labourers, daily wage workers, truck drivers and other communities about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and encourage them to quit tobacco.
As part of the campaign, awareness activities were conducted at Pratap Nagar Chauraha, Saloni Kanta Industrial Area, Transport Nagar and Zinc Chauraha. During these programmes, information was provided about the serious health effects of consuming tobacco products such as gutkha, khaini, pan masala, bidi, cigarettes and hookah.
During the awareness sessions, participants were informed in simple and local language about health problems caused by tobacco use, including oral cancer, lung diseases, heart disease and other health-related issues. Information on effective methods of quitting tobacco was also shared, and awareness materials and pamphlets were distributed.
On May 30, the department staged a street play at Zinc Chauraha highlighting the harmful consequences of tobacco consumption. The performance presented the issue in a lively and motivating manner and attracted the attention of local residents, shopkeepers and passers-by, encouraging them to adopt a tobacco-free lifestyle.
During World No Tobacco Week, members of the public and professionals from different sectors were administered a pledge to lead a tobacco-free life. Participants pledged not to consume tobacco themselves and to encourage their family members, friends and society to stay away from tobacco.
On the occasion, college Principal Dr. A. Bhagwan Das Rai highlighted the importance of tobacco control and health promotion and appreciated such public awareness initiatives. The programmes were conducted and guided under the leadership of Dr. Kailash Asawa, Head of the Department of Public Health Dentistry.
Dr. Ankita Rawal, Assistant Professor, along with all faculty members of the department, postgraduate students, interns and the departmental team, actively participated in the awareness activities.
The week-long campaign received a highly positive response from the public and proved effective in increasing awareness about tobacco control and healthy lifestyles in society.
