Kolkata, June 2: As monsoon rains continue to bless parts of North Bengal, residents of Kolkata and South Bengal remain stuck under oppressive heat and rising humidity. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), relief from the sweltering conditions is not expected anytime soon.
Cloudy Skies but Scant Rain in Kolkata
Monday began with overcast skies in Kolkata, but hopes for widespread rainfall remain slim. The maximum temperature in the city is expected to climb to around 36°C, with only scattered light to moderate showers anticipated in isolated pockets of the city. The IMD forecasts no significant change in South Bengal’s weather pattern over the next five days, indicating continued discomfort due to humidity.
Weak Rain Prospects in South Bengal
The IMD reports that rainfall activity in South Bengal during the first week of June is likely to be minimal, exacerbating the already intense heat driven by high humidity. Moderate rainfall is expected to arrive in some districts by the second week of June, with a gradual increase in intensity during the third week. However, the overall rainfall for the month is projected to remain below normal, with less than 250mm expected across the region.
Active Monsoon in North Bengal
In contrast, monsoon has already advanced into North Bengal, with scattered rainfall predicted on Monday across Malda, North Dinajpur, and South Dinajpur. The IMD has also issued a heavy rainfall alert for five districts in the region, signaling active monsoon conditions.
Heavy Rain Forecast Across India
Apart from Bengal, the IMD has issued heavy to very heavy rainfall alerts for several northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Similar alerts are in effect for Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Karnataka, Kerala, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry.
Meanwhile, parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh are expected to witness thunderstorms with wind speeds ranging between 40 to 50 km/h, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.
No Immediate Relief in Sight
For Kolkata and much of South Bengal, the coming days are likely to remain uncomfortable, dominated by sultry weather, partial cloud cover, and occasional isolated showers. Residents are advised to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours.
