Mumbai-Pune Expressway Tunnel Project Sets Guinness World Record

Mumbai, May 2: The missing link tunnel project of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has been officially recorded in the Guinness World Records. This project is considered one of the most modern and safest road development initiatives in India. It allows vehicles to travel at speeds of up to approximately 100 kilometers per hour, making journeys smoother and more comfortable.

Designed to be a completely safe route, the project aims to minimize the likelihood of accidents, earning it the designation of a Zero Fatality Corridor. The project is expected to reduce travel time by nearly 30 minutes and save around ₹9 crore in fuel costs daily. It features advanced air quality control and emergency safety systems, including a call-for-help mechanism and a public announcement system.

The tunnels are equipped with advanced fire safety measures and a special system to control airflow. Additionally, smart traffic monitoring systems have been established to ensure continuous oversight along the entire route.

The project extends from the Khopoli exit to the Lonavala area, including an eight-lane expansion of the Khalapur-Khopoli section, with a total cost exceeding ₹6,695 crore. A notable feature is the country’s highest cable-stayed bridge in the Tiger Valley area, standing at approximately 182 meters.

The entire route includes several tunnels and bridges, with one major tunnel measuring about 8.87 kilometers and another approximately 1.68 kilometers long. Emergency exits have been constructed every few hundred meters for safe evacuation in any situation.

With the new route, the previous distance of 19 kilometers through the old ghat has been reduced by about 6 kilometers, making travel faster and more convenient.
