Massive Public Support for Former King Gyanendra Sparks Political Turmoil in Nepal

Kathmandu, March 10 – Nepal’s Political Landscape in Turmoil A massive public demonstration in support of former King Gyanendra Shah has sent shockwaves through Nepal’s political corridors, triggering sharp reactions from the country’s major political parties. Prominent leaders have strongly criticized the former monarch, warning him to remain within constitutional limits and refrain from inciting the public against the democratic system.

The unprecedented gathering, which saw thousands rallying from Tribhuvan International Airport to the former king’s residence, has reignited debates on monarchy versus democracy, leading to strong political backlash from Nepal’s ruling and opposition parties alike.

Government Warns Former King Against Violating Constitutional Limits

Nepali Congress leader and Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak issued a stern warning to the former king, stating that if he does not adhere to Nepal’s current constitutional framework, the state could withdraw all security and privileges provided to him.

“If the former king continues activities that contradict the constitution and laws, the government will be compelled to take legal action,” Lekhak stated. He emphasized that Gyanendra Shah’s recent actions are unconstitutional and could pose a threat to the democratic system established after the abolition of the monarchy in 2008.

Ruling Communist Party Condemns Attempts to Reignite Monarchy

The ruling Communist Party of Nepal – Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML) also expressed deep dissatisfaction with the growing support for the former king. Party General Secretary Shankar Pokharel issued a strong statement, challenging Gyanendra Shah to enter politics through democratic means if he wishes to return to power.

“If the former king dreams of returning to power, he should form his own political party, contest elections, and secure a two-thirds majority to amend the constitution,” Pokharel asserted.

He further warned that the current constitution has no provision for monarchy, and any attempt to destabilize the democratic system would result in serious consequences.

Maoist Party Calls for Immediate Action Against Former King

The Maoist party, a key force behind the abolition of Nepal’s monarchy, also issued a sharp rebuke against Gyanendra Shah’s rising popularity. Party spokesperson Panga Bhusal declared that the resurgence of the former king posed a direct threat to Nepal’s republican achievements.

“Thousands sacrificed their lives in a decade-long struggle to overthrow the monarchy. The former king’s activities now endanger the republic we fought for,” Bhusal said.

The Maoist leadership has demanded an urgent meeting of major political parties to discuss possible actions against the former monarch to prevent any political instability.

Janata Samajbadi Party Demands Legal Action Against Gyanendra Shah

Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) President Upendra Yadav also strongly condemned the former king’s actions, asserting that no individual is above the constitution.

“The constitution, republicanism, and secularism must be protected at all costs. The former king’s recent moves are against Nepal’s democratic framework and must be legally addressed before they become a serious threat,” Yadav warned.

He further emphasized that failure to take immediate control over the situation could put Nepal’s constitutional democracy at risk.

What Lies Ahead for Nepal’s Political Future?

With public sentiment shifting in favor of monarchy, Nepal’s major political parties are now on high alert, strategizing ways to prevent any political reversal that could challenge the existing democratic system.

While the former king’s recent show of support highlights dissatisfaction with Nepal’s current political leadership, it remains to be seen whether this momentum will translate into a larger political movement or if the government will take strict actions to suppress any resurgence of the monarchy.
