Gariaband, September 9 (Udaipur Kiran) : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognizance of alarming reports from Gariaband district in Chhattisgarh, where numerous school children are compelled to cross a river using a narrow and slippery iron ladder connected to an incomplete bridge.
According to media reports, this situation poses a serious violation of human rights. In response, the NHRC has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Chhattisgarh, demanding a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
Children from the Khambatha area and nearby settlements in the Mainpur block reportedly have to climb this iron ladder to cross the Pari River to reach school. The river, which is relatively shallow, becomes perilously swollen during the monsoon season, making it extremely dangerous for the children to navigate.
Reports indicate that the construction of a bridge spanning approximately 300 meters between Deharaguda and Khambatha in the Mainpur block has been ongoing for the past six years. Local authorities had assured villagers about a year ago that the bridge would be completed within six months; however, the work remains unfinished, forcing school children and local residents to risk their safety by using this hazardous route.
Established under the Human Rights Protection Act of 1993, the NHRC is an autonomous statutory body that reflects India’s commitment to promoting and protecting human rights. Its primary role is to safeguard rights related to life, liberty, equality, and dignity, as guaranteed by the Constitution or included in international agreements enforceable in Indian courts.
The NHRC has the authority to take action based on media reports, public information, or other sources, even without formal complaints of human rights violations.
