Maharashtra Begins Self-Counting for Caste Census

Mumbai, May 2: The self-counting process for the 2027 census commenced in Maharashtra on Friday, coinciding with the state’s foundation day. Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Ramdas Athawale, emphasized that the caste census will aid the government in providing assistance to each caste.

The self-counting will take place from May 1 to May 15, 2026, followed by a door-to-door enumeration from June 16 to June 14, 2026. Census officials will conduct surveys in households during this period.

Caste-related information will be included in the second phase of the population census. Athawale stated that officials from the census department attended a meeting today, where he urged all citizens to cooperate in the census process, which will help determine the population of Maharashtra as well as the entire country.

He highlighted that the most significant aspect of this census is the central government’s decision to conduct it based on caste. Previously, only Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes were included in the census, but this time, it will encompass every religion and caste.

Describing the benefits of the caste census, he noted that it will reveal the percentage of each caste, the number of individuals employed, the number of farmers, and those living in poverty, along with details about housing. This will provide the government with the opportunity to assist each caste effectively.

The minister appealed to citizens to cooperate when census officials visit their homes and to utilize the census portal. Currently, house listing (HLO) is underway in various states, followed by the population enumeration (PE).

Athawale remarked that the commencement of the census on Maharashtra Day is significant.
