Udaipur : A 40-year old man was killed by a leopard that dragged him out of his home in wee hours on Wednesday at Barapal village in Sarada tehsil under Parsad police station limits of Udaipur district. The beast dragged the man by his neck and ate away one of his leg. The body was found in bushes some 100 yards away from his home, forest officials said. Panic hit the area after the incident and villagers gathered in large number demanding immediate capture of the beast. ” We have constituted four teams in four adjoining villages including Bara, Patiya, Paduna and Chanavda, four cages have been laid at these places and a tranquilizing team will be stationed here till the big cat is trapped” Deputy Conservator of Forest Ajay Chittora told Udaipur Kiran.
Devilal son of Kalaji Meena was sleeping in the open area of his house when the leopard struck and dragged him away. ” The incident happened early morning, Devilal’s family shouted for help and before the villagers could come to rescue, the wild cat had killed him. The big cat ate one of his leg and vanished into the forest when villagers shouted and went to look for Devilal” ASI Nanalal said. Large number of people gathered in the area and protested against the incident. Forest officials who arrived at the spot, tried to pacify the villagers who suspected the leopard may attack again as it could have turned into a man eater.
People said that Devilal ‘s home was not near the jungle but few yards away from the road. Since the leopard had entered the human settlement once, there are increased chances of it striking again and target children, women or anyone else. Villagers demanded the forest authorities to catch the big cat at earliest as they said they were not safe, they also demanded ex-gratia for the aggrieved family.
