Dead Leopard Found with Head Wound and Severed Tail in Udaipur’s Forest: Foul Play Suspected

Udaipur : A dead leopard found in the forested area of Tarapal village, located at the border of Sayra and Devla forest regions in Udaipur, has sparked tension among locals. The carcass was discovered in Ganpala Fala’s jungle with a severe wound on its head, infested with maggots, and a severed tail, raising suspicions of foul play. Forest Ranger Surendra Singh confirmed that the leopard’s body appeared to be two to three days old, adding that the cause of death will be determined only after the post-mortem.

The carcass was transported to the Udaipur veterinary hospital, where the post-mortem procedure is underway. As per protocol, the remains will be cremated following the autopsy.

Possible Link to a Previous Leopard Killing

Interestingly, the forest where the leopard was found is located 15 kilometers away from Kamol village in the Sayra police jurisdiction, where a similar incident occurred just two months ago. On October 11, 2024, villagers in Kamol had beaten a leopard to death after it attacked a local resident, Dewaram Gameti. At the time, forest officials claimed the leopard was killed with a weapon due to the deep head wound found on the animal. However, the villagers had denied the accusations, claiming they acted in self-defense.

The discovery of another dead leopard in the same region has now raised concerns and brought the spotlight back on the area.

Leopard Movement on the Rise in Sayra and Devla

The Sayra and Devla forest areas have witnessed increased leopard activity in recent months. Locals from villages such as Nadeshma, Dhol, and Tarapal have reported frequent sightings of leopards over the past week. The fear among residents remains high, especially after a series of fatal leopard attacks in October, when nine people were reportedly killed by a man-eating leopard in the Sayra-Gogunda block.

The heightened leopard presence has left the community living in constant fear, with many calling for stronger forest patrols and better safety measures. While forest officials continue to investigate the latest incident, questions remain about the region’s growing human-wildlife conflict and the safety of locals residing in leopard-prone areas.

Post-Mortem Findings Crucial

Forest officials have emphasized that the post-mortem report will be crucial in determining whether the leopard died from a fight with another animal or was deliberately killed. Until the findings are released, the circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear. However, given the history of leopard-related violence in the area, the discovery has added another layer of concern for both the authorities and the local population.
