Thiruvananthapuram, May 4: Congress General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP KC Venugopal has described the election results as a decisive shift in public sentiment. Speaking on Monday, he stated that these results validate the opposition’s assessment of a wave of change across Kerala.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is leading in 102 seats, while the Left Democratic Front (LDF) is ahead in 36 seats, and the BJP has won two seats, including in Nehmoom.
Venugopal emphasized that throughout the election campaign, they maintained that a wave was building. Even when exit polls indicated otherwise, they remained confident of a strong victory, expecting to cross the 100-seat mark. He noted that this assessment was based on consistent feedback from the ground.
He remarked that they could sense the pulse of the voters, and today’s decision reflects that sentiment. Targeting the ruling government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Venugopal argued that the aggressive campaign launched by the government after its defeat in the local body elections in December failed to change voter perceptions.
He stated that after that significant loss, a massive campaign was conducted with heavy spending, but the public remained unconvinced. He characterized the results as a strong blow to the CPI-M leadership and its workers’ arrogance, citing events in Kannur, traditionally a Left bastion, as evidence of widespread change.
The Congress leader pointed to Payyanur, a constituency that has consistently elected prominent CPI-M leaders, and Taliparamba, long regarded as a party stronghold. Emerging trends from these areas clearly indicate that even in the party’s core strongholds, changes are occurring.
Commenting on the Chief Minister’s election campaign, he described the victory as ‘technical,’ noting that Vijayan was trailing in the early counting stages but later made a comeback. He stated that the initial results reflected the ground-level mood of the people.
Venugopal concluded that this decision signals a broader change in Kerala’s political landscape, with voters demanding accountability and responsible governance. He emphasized that this is not just an electoral outcome but a message, and he stressed their commitment to maintaining this momentum in the coming months.
