PIMS Hospital Successfully Treats Heart Defect Without Open-Heart Surgery

Udaipur, October 10 (Udaipur Kiran): Doctors at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital in Umarda, Udaipur, have successfully treated a patient with a congenital heart defect without open-heart surgery. The procedure was performed using a minimally invasive technique to close the opening in the heart.

Treats Heart Defect

PIMS Chairman Ashish Agrawal said the hospital’s Cardiology Department treated the patient without major surgical incision. The treatment was provided free of cost under the Chiranjeevi health scheme.

Senior Consultant and Interventional Cardiologist Dr Mahesh Jain and his team performed a Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) device closure procedure to close the congenital defect.

What Is Patent Ductus Arteriosus?

Ashish Agrawal explained that the passage connecting two major blood vessels near the heart normally closes on its own within the first few months after birth. In some cases, however, the passage remains open. This condition is known as Patent Ductus Arteriosus, or PDA.

If left untreated, the condition can cause health problems and may affect normal physical development.

Heart Defect Closed Using Device Closure Technique

Dr Mahesh Jain said people with PDA may experience breathlessness while walking fast or climbing stairs, dizziness and weakness. Their physical development may also be slower than that of other people.

The PDA device closure technique is used to close the opening without open-heart surgery. The umbrella-shaped device consists of two umbrella-like sections connected by a narrow central portion. It is delivered to the affected area through a catheter and positioned to close the abnormal passage.

Dr Jain performed the procedure with support from cardiac anaesthetist Dr Vipin Sisodia, cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon Dr Vivek Rawat, and Dr Puneet, who also played an important role in the treatment.

The successful procedure highlights the availability of minimally invasive cardiac treatment at PIMS Hospital, Umarda.
