PIMS City Hospital and PIMS Umarda Team Save High-Risk Pregnant Woman and Newborn

Udaipur, October 9 (Udaipur Kiran): In a major medical achievement, teams from PIMS City Hospital and PIMS Hospital, Umarda, successfully managed a highly complex, high-risk pregnancy involving multiple chronic medical conditions. Both the mother and her newborn were discharged from the hospital in stable and healthy condition following treatment.

PIMS City Hospital

The case involved a full-term pregnant woman suffering from chronic liver disease, hypersplenism, portal hypertension and severe thrombocytopenia, a condition marked by an extremely low platelet count. She had also been experiencing recurrent nosebleeds for the past three to four years.

At the time of admission, her preoperative platelet count was critically low, ranging between 10,000 and 13,000 per microlitre. The condition had not responded to conventional steroid treatment or intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) therapy. An ultrasound examination also indicated fatty liver and significant enlargement of the spleen, known as splenomegaly.

Two Hospitals Coordinate Treatment Strategy

Considering the high risk of life-threatening bleeding, the two hospitals developed a comprehensive, step-by-step treatment and emergency management plan.

The patient was initially stabilised at PIMS City Hospital by a specialist team led by Dr Shabdika Kulshreshtha. Dr Shikha, Dr Ajay Pal Singh, Dr Ajay Arora and Dr Sachin Modi also played important roles in her treatment.

Preoperative risk assessment and detailed emergency preparedness were coordinated by Dr Sachin Jain, Dr Dhawal Vyas, Dr K.K. Bishnoi and Dr Ganesh Gupta.

To ensure access to advanced blood-bank facilities and the immediate availability of single-donor platelets, the patient was subsequently transferred to PIMS Hospital, Umarda.

At the Umarda centre, a dedicated critical care team comprising Dr Kamlesh Shekhawat, Dr Ravi, Dr Amita, Dr Anil Bhiwal, Dr Amit Jangid and Dr Sushma monitored the patient round the clock.

Newborn Receives Specialised Treatment

With the support of advanced operation theatre facilities and intensive care infrastructure, the medical team successfully completed the delivery. However, the newborn also showed signs of thrombocytopenia, requiring immediate IVIg infusion therapy.

The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) team, led by Dr Rahul, Dr Girish and Dr Kapil, provided specialised care. The newborn responded to treatment and showed improvement.

Teamwork Played a Key Role

Expressing satisfaction with the outcome, lead specialist Dr Shabdika Kulshreshtha said the case demonstrated the importance of coordination, teamwork, advance preparation and mutual trust.

She said the team had successfully managed a situation that would have been highly challenging even for major national medical institutions. She also acknowledged the collective efforts of resident doctors, nursing staff, physiotherapists, technicians and other healthcare workers.

The medical team expressed gratitude to the institution’s patrons, Ashish Agrawal, Sheetal Agrawal and Naman Agrawal, for providing advanced infrastructure and facilities at both hospitals. According to the team, this support played a crucial role in the successful treatment of the mother and newborn.
