Mumbai, May 25 – When Bipasha Basu was at the peak of her Bollywood career, she was offered a role that not only defied the norms of a traditional Hindi film heroine but also shook the very image she had carefully built. The film was Jism (2003), a sensual thriller packed with bold scenes that few thought she should take on. Yet, against all advice, Bipasha went ahead — and the result changed her career trajectory forever.

“Everyone Told Me Not to Do It”
In a candid conversation with Times Now, Bipasha revealed how Jism was a turning point. “I was at the peak of my career when I was offered Jism. Everyone told me, ‘You cannot do this kind of adult-content film. You’re a traditional Bollywood heroine, and audiences love you that way.’ Even my manager thought I had lost my mind,” she shared.
But Bipasha wasn’t swayed. Drawn to the film’s powerful narrative, she stood her ground. “I told them — I love the story and I’m going to do it,” she recalled. Her decision was seen as risky at the time, especially since she starred opposite her then-boyfriend, John Abraham, in what was also his debut film.
From Risk to Reward
Made on a modest budget of ₹5 crore, Jism grossed more than ₹13 crore worldwide — a remarkable achievement for an adult-themed thriller at the time. But more than its box office numbers, it was Bipasha’s daring performance that turned heads.
The film broke stereotypes. Her portrayal of a seductive yet layered woman opened doors for actresses to take on more complex, negative roles without fear of being typecast. “There was no stereotype left after Jism,” Bipasha noted. “Women started styling their hair like mine from the film — it became a signature look. It was a bold role, but it expanded my career, not ruined it.”
A Defining Role in Bollywood
Released in 2003, Jism is now considered a cult classic in the erotic thriller genre of Bollywood. Bipasha’s unapologetic performance was a stark contrast to the sugar-coated romantic leads of that era. Her choice to embrace a negative and sensual role redefined what a Bollywood heroine could be — confident, daring, and empowered.
The film not only helped establish Bipasha as a serious actress but also opened up a new genre in mainstream Hindi cinema. In retrospect, Jism became one of the most defining films of her career.
Out of the Spotlight, But Not Forgotten
While Bipasha has been away from the big screen for nearly seven years, fans still remember her iconic roles. Her last appearance was in the 2020 web series Dangerous, alongside her husband Karan Singh Grover. Directed by Bhushan Patel, the series failed to leave a lasting mark.
As of now, Bipasha Basu has not officially announced any comeback project, but her fans remain eager to see her return to the screen — perhaps with another role that defies expectations.
