Renowned spiritual leader Jaggi Vasudev, founder of the Isha Foundation, has sparked a renewed debate on whether electric vehicles (EVs) are genuinely a sustainable solution to combat pollution. Speaking at Chikkaballapur on December 22, Vasudev highlighted the long-term environmental impact of EVs, raising questions about their role in reducing pollution, particularly in a country like India, which relies heavily on coal for electricity generation.

EVs and Coal Dependency: A Double-Edged Sword
Vasudev pointed out that while EVs eliminate tailpipe emissions, their environmental benefits are undermined by the methods used to produce the electricity that powers them. In India, coal contributes nearly 50% of the electricity generated annually, making it the dominant energy source. Vasudev remarked:
“We are told that driving EVs will help save the environment. Of course, since these vehicles don’t emit smoke, it is good for the cities and towns. But it is not so for the long-term health of the environment.”
Although diesel plays a minor role in power generation, India’s reliance on fossil fuels significantly diminishes the potential of EVs as a pollution-reducing technology. For EVs to become truly eco-friendly, India would need to transition to cleaner energy sources like hydro, wind, and solar, which currently contribute around 41% of the nation’s electricity.
The Battery Conundrum
Vasudev also touched upon a widely acknowledged issue: the environmental cost of producing EV batteries. From mining for raw materials like lithium and cobalt to the challenges of battery disposal, the process raises serious concerns about pollution and sustainability. Without advancements in battery technology and more sustainable sourcing, EVs may only shift pollution from cities to mining regions and industrial zones.
A Broader Perspective on Sustainability
Jaggi Vasudev’s comments align with the argument that transitioning to EVs alone won’t solve the larger environmental crisis. While EVs reduce urban air pollution, their long-term eco-friendliness depends on addressing:
- Clean Energy Adoption: Accelerating the shift to renewable energy for electricity generation.
- Sustainable Battery Production: Developing greener alternatives to current battery materials and recycling technologies.
- Holistic Policies: Ensuring that EV adoption is paired with sustainable infrastructure development.
Jaggi Vasudev’s Passion for Automobiles
Interestingly, Vasudev is known for his love of high-performance automobiles, many of which run on petrol or diesel. His collection includes luxury vehicles like the Mercedes-AMG G-Class, and superbikes such as the BMW K 1600 GT, Ducati Multistrada 1260, and the Scrambler Desert Sled. He has often been seen enjoying rides and even offering them to fellow spiritual leaders like Ramdev.
