Ahmedabad, March 8: In a thrilling display of batting, India has set a formidable target of 256 runs for New Zealand in the final of the T20 World Cup 2026. The match, being held at the Narendra Modi Stadium, saw Indian captain Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan shine with their explosive performances.
Winning the toss, New Zealand’s captain Mitchell Santner opted to field first, allowing India to take the crease. India finished their innings at 255 runs, losing 5 wickets in the process.
The opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma provided a strong start, putting together a partnership of 98 runs in just 7.1 overs. Abhishek scored 52 runs off 21 balls, hitting 3 sixes and 6 fours before returning to the pavilion.
Samson continued the momentum, partnering with Ishan Kishan to add 105 runs for the second wicket in 48 balls, propelling India past the 200-run mark. Samson scored 89 runs off 46 balls, featuring 8 sixes and 5 fours, marking his third consecutive half-century in the tournament.
India faced a setback in the 16th over when they lost Samson. Ishan Kishan, who scored 54 runs off 25 balls with 4 sixes and 4 fours, and captain Suryakumar Yadav, who went for a duck, also fell in quick succession.
Despite losing 4 wickets for 204 runs, Tilak Varma stepped up, contributing crucial runs with Hardik Pandya (18) and Shivam Dubey (not out 26) to help India reach 255 runs, the highest score in T20 World Cup knockout history.
For New Zealand, James Neesham took 3 wickets for 46 runs in his 4 overs, while Rachin Ravindra and Matt Henry claimed 1 wicket each. India fielded an unchanged XI, while New Zealand made one change, bringing in Jacob Duffy for Cole McConchie.
